FAQs for FLM Students
How long will the course take to complete?
Depending upon the level of qualification and agreed delivery strategy, a single unit usually takes one month to complete.
Since the course is delivered via a flexible learning and assessment program, study will normally be completed within a twelve month period. However, some study groups may progress at a faster rate, and work and family commitments may also affect this time frame.
Will I have to do the course in my own time?
Most courses are delivered via structured facilitated training sessions in the workplace, during work hours. The duration of these training sessions is normally a half day or 4-5 hours. During these sessions your trainer will prepare you to competently complete activities and assessments, both during the session and in your own time. In most instances, a large proportion of reading and assessment is conducted during work hours in the training session, however, there is an element of commitment needed from the participant to work on assessments during their own time in order to successfully complete the qualification.
What will I get from this training?
You may have lots of technical know how, but lack the people and personal management skills or the formal training required to advance within your work environment. PPS training allows you to utilise your acquired workplace skills to address the key requirements of an effective frontline employee / manager.
This program is very practical as it concentrates on the concept of workplace learning, which ensures its relevance to your particular situation and business with assessment tailored specifically to your needs.
You will develop the skills and knowledge to ensure you:
- become an effective team leader
- are a pro-active and innovative contributor
- are recognised for your planning skills and consistent ability to reach goals
- develop effective and efficient team oriented environments
- achieve greater profits and strategic outcomes
As a participant you will be given the opportunity to build relationships not only with your immediate network of colleagues and stakeholders, but also with a broad community of past and present PPS students.
You will acquire a nationally recognised, industry transportable, management qualification which will give you skills for work, and skills for life!
Is training 'class room based' or 'on-the-job'?
Qualifications are delivered via blended delivery which simply means that we tailor the design of the program to suit the course content and needs of the business / employees.
In most circumstances a PPS Facilitator will deliver one face-to-face training session per month, for a duration of approximately 4-5 hours. An element of assessment is completed on-the-job through the use of third party reports, workplace observations and collection of workplace evidence. You will be required to forward plan your attendance at all face-to-face training sessions in order to stay current with learning and assessment.
Where can I take this qualification?
Under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), all courses and qualifications delivered by PPS are nationally registered and are mutually recognised in all Australian States / Territories.
Our business courses are aligned with the Business Services Training Package. The competencies are entirely based on what is required to be effective and efficient in the workplace in what is regarded both in Australia and overseas as 'best practice operational management'.
How difficult is the course?
The course is not difficult and experienced trainers are there to support you with your studies. The course is based on nationally endorsed training packages which set standards in line with industry standards. The training packages describe the skills and knowledge which individuals need to perform effectively in the workplace. All PPS training is tailored to suit the practical elements and needs of the employer, therefore, it is easy to understand and work through. It is the trainers' task to deliver these packages in an easy to understand format. This is achieved by classroom and workplace activities, assessments, and a supporting group environment.
What extra support is provided throughout the course?
PPS staff and assessors are always available to assist you with any queries regarding assignments.
Kate Grainger’s primary role is to provide student support and maintain compliance of the training organisation. Kate will provide you with ongoing support regarding a range of enquiries.
Jessica Klein liases with students and prepares student enrolment packs and training materials.
Jeannie Barker is the developer and moderator of The PPS Student Network, a community webspace where our course participants can network, motivate and inspire each other, interact with trainers in-between sessions, seek or offer informal mentoring and share their learning experiences.
What if I am on leave at any time during the course?
Training sessions are carefully planned to take into consideration leave and rostering implications. If you find that your training session falls on a day that you are unable to attend, your facilitator and fellow participants will assist you in catching up so that you do not fall behind.
A range of communication methods will be used to achieve this including: phone; fax; email, net meetings and catch-up coaching sessions. In most circumstances a new module / unit is started in each training session, therefore it is important that you attend all training sessions where possible. We understand that due to the nature of your business there are times where work demands are beyond your control and we will always do our best to accommodate this, however, it is very important (for your own benefit) that you do not miss any training sessions.
If I only complete some of the course, can I receive exemptions elsewhere?
The units of competency you have completed are recognised nationally and on completion do not have to be repeated. When continuing further studies at any TAFE or private RTO nationally, you will be given exemptions (mutual recognition) for any units you have completed. This is recorded on your academic transcript.
Can I complete the course early?
You may find that you progress through your assessments quicker than others or you may have completed similar courses which cover part of the qualification you are enrolled it. In some instances it may be possible that you proceed with planned studies, however you are required to attend all scheduled training sessions to partake in group discussions, exercises and project tasks.
If you are identified by your facilitator as being competent and progressing quickly with your assessments, you may be asked to assist others with their assessments in the role of a mentor.
